The 2013 Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work profiles promising and innovative practices from 246 employers that are creating effective and flexible workplaces to make work “work” better for both the bottom line and for employees.
All of the employers are recipients of the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility. They have been selected through a rigorous application process that incorporates an employer and employee survey. The winners are a diverse group, representing employers of different sizes and industries. Some operate from a single office with a staff of 10, while others are global enterprises with employees numbering in the tens of thousands. They also come from all over the country, representing 40 states and the District of Columbia.
The Sloan Awards are part of When Work Works, a nationwide initiative to bring research on workplace effectiveness and flexibility into community and business practice. When Work Works partners with communities and states around the country to:
- Share rigorous research and employer best practices on workplace effectiveness and flexibility;
- Recognize exemplary employers through the Sloan Awards based on surveys of employers and employees; and
- Inspire positive change so that increasing numbers of employers understand how effective and flexible workplaces can benefit both business and employees, and use this information to make work “work.”
